Have You Read the Cowboy Book Monte Walsh by Jack Schaefer
Tom Sheehan

Have you read Monte Walsh, a book by Jack Schaefer?

Friend Frank Welton did, by the fireside and camp light,

in the Tumble Inn Diner amid coffee and egg sandwiches

on bulkie rolls with the twin yolks still unbroken, on the

Southeast Expressway as an accident tied up traffic for

hours atop prayers, at lunch, at ease, at noon, the day

almost cut in half, the highlighter flashing on the pages

like a sword in the heart of the Yucatan, in a parking lot

Filene’s once owned now a late Wal-Mart acquisition,

at reach of his morning hand beside his Saturday bed,

then he gave me that battered, worn, uplifting volume

where ink had disappeared right off the pages, friend

Frank who has ridden right into that cowboy sunset.
