Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

THE SINGING COWBOY
Joel T. Bailey

Jimmy was a cowboy
He rode for the Rocking R
When he wasn't punching cattle
He was picking his old guitar

Jimmy loved being a cowboy
But he also loved to pick and sing
His heart would swell with pride
At the joy his songs would bring

Out on the roundup he'd yodel
The Lonesome Cattle Call
By the campfire at night he'd sing
When The work's all Done This Fall

When he sang The Yellow Rose Of Texas
The boys would clap and cheer
But when he sang The Streets Of Laredo
They all would shed a tear

He'd sing at the dances
That were held each Saturday night
For as long as he was singing
No one would start a fight

That he had a gift for singing
Was something he knew from the start
For he could calm the wildest steer
And melt the coldest heart

He knew that he was blessed
For God had gave him that voice
That made him a singer by birth
But he was a cowboy by choice
