Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

ROUNDUP TIME
Joel T. Bailey

The cowboys are up at daylight
Breakfast done and saddles are on
They know what has to be done
So with the rising sun, they're gone

Most of the cattle are scattered
And its hard work to bring them in
The boys work the brush and gullies
And herd'um to a holding pen

Some of the old ones drive easy
But the young ones want to run
Its hot and dangerous work
And nothing about it is fun

Now its time for the branding
With the smell of burning hair
And its sometimes hard to breath
As smoke and dust fills the air

All the steers are now separated
For they're the ones for sale
Now they'll be shipped by trucks
And not on a long dusty trail

The cowboys are glad its over
And a celabration will begin
Then its back to a daily routine
Until its roundup time agin
