RIDING THE LINE
Joel T. Bailey

He grew tired of drifting
So he decided to settle down
He would look for a job
When he got to the next town

He'd done some cowboying
So he'd check around
He didn't mind working cattle
For forty and found

But a job as a line rider
Was all he could get
It wasn't what he wanted
But he'd try it for a bit

The line shack he had to use
Was weathered and old
But it was solid enough
To keep out the cold

All day he rode the fences
Keeping them all tight
Then he'd let the coyotes
Sing him to sleep at night

He got so bored at times
That he wanted to bawl
He'd stare at the ceiling
And talk to the wall

Then one day he told his self
I'm quitting this job of mine
I'd just as soon be drifting
As out riding the line
