Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

Monkey Face
Douglas Polk

Monkey Face,
the calf that got away,
roaming my Grandpa's farm,
wild and crazy,
dashing through my dreams,
a living, breathing nightmare,
two years went by,
before we could catch her,
and load her for the sale,
two winters,
all Grandpa's cattle moved closer to town,
but not Monkey Face,
she spent her winters in solitude,
the way she preferred,
the day we finally caught her,
my brothers, sister and I,
forced to run the hills of the pasture,
keeping her out of the trees,
while the men rode horses in pursuit,
finally able to wear her down,
rope and load her for the sale barn,
I spent a sleepless night or two,
waiting and wondering what would be her revenge,
until the new girl moved to town,
chasing Monkey Face from my dreams.
