Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
Laura
Delia J Fry

the texas heat boggles
and the humidity drains
his body feels stifled
even though it rains

old muddied boots
with flapping tongue
creak the old porch
as old hands are wrung

weary is the cowboy
the edges now frayed
the once steady mind
now somber, afraid

but in the distance
a glimpse, a memory
of a short young life
but in mind illusory

but, he wrote it all down
with a scratchy old pen
his scrawl in black ink
to remember back when

a devoted young marshall
priorities set aside
keeping the town peace
til his beloved wife died

it was spring she dwindled
with weakness of her heart
he slept as she left him
as her breath gave a start

as whiskey dulled his pain
and burned out his soul
his steady heart trembled
as sadness took its toll

now he rocks on the porch
and whispers her name
worried and wondering
if he was to blame....
