Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

Two Poems By Clark Crouch

A Boy's Dream
Clark Crouch

The dream of ev'ry boy, it seems,
is to be a cowboy,
ridin' free across this great land...
such dreams fill life with joy.

But boys don't know what life is like
out in this lonely land,
cattle. your only company,
and endless hills of sand.

There's times when this work just ain't fun
and life seems sorta mean.
When the dirt and dust's a-blowin'
it seems downright obscene.

The weather gets just to darn hot
on cloudless August days
when no raindrop has touched the ground
to break the dusty haze.

And the winters ain't no better;
when cold lies o'er the hills
and six-foot snowdrifts bar the trails,
you suffer from the chills.

Then the food - it ain't high dinin',
just bacon and some beans
with the cook's hard boot heel biscuits
and never salad greens.

The pay just ain't so very much,
a buck a day or so,
but there ain't no place to spend it
'cause there's no place to go.

Even with them things considered,
I'd never change my work
because it's a life of freedom
and one I'd never shirk.

So dream on all you young fellers,
If freedom is your bent
you'll find that life as a cowboy
is sorta heaven sent.

It does take a special person,
to live and ride alone,
but independent men will thrive
and never be outshone.

The cowboy's king of this domain,
no boss is close at hand,
he deals with problems when they rise
as he rides for the brand.

The Backward Poet
Clark Crouch

Sam, a backward cowboy poet,
was challenged by a curse
because each of the poems he wrote
wound up to be inverse.
