Cowboy Poetry

An Old Hand
Douglas Polk

He expresses more with a look,
than words could ever say,
easy to know when the job done meets his approval,
whether stringing wire,
working cattle,
or cutting hay,
He carries himself with confidence,
proud of the life chosen,
the hundreds of miles of fixing fence,
Cowboying more than a job or career,
It is an act of worship,
and a thank you,
to a God held dear.
____________

No Water
Douglas Polk

No wind today,
the horses to saddle,
no water for either,
I or the cattle,
trail dust for lunch,
and probably dinner,
poker tonight in the bunkhouse,
hope I am a winner,
later stock tanks to fill,
pumpjack in the back of the truck,
up ahead trees appear,
remember to duck,
down the trail,
and into the river,
water to drink,
not as tasty as beer,
but better for my liver.
